Memoirs of Sir William Arbuthnot Lane

Memoirs of this famous surgeon edited by Dr David Preston. See a preview of the book.

The late Victorian era was a time of rapid advance in medicine and surgery. Arbuthnot Lane was a brilliant and controversial figure, considered by many to be the best surgeon in London. He upset many in the medical establishment by challenging conventional treatments and espousing radical causes like women’s rights and free contraception.

His views on orthopaedic surgery were gradually accepted but his treatment of constipation has remained controversial to the present day. This memoir, originally intended for his children, contains a fascinating account of his life as a young doctor at Guy’s Hospital in the 1880’s and numerous anecdotes of the famous people he met or treated.
